Yeps so Xmas is almost with us…today’s finally D-Day for Mr. Claus. Panic buying kicks in for some, others settle in that sweet mellowness that only comes this time of year (when you’ve sorted out your gifts, that is!).
I’m in the latter category at the moment since we finished our last gifts yesterday. We went to Valletta partly to get the last gifts, but more relevantly to get a few pictures of the street Xmas decorations. This is a somewhat simple take on our Xmas agenda, however this year being our Baby’s-First-Xmas we thought it’d be a shame not to, really.

Xmas eve is also traditionally characterised by two diametrically opposed night time activities in Malta. On the one hand many Maltese opt to go to the midnight mass held in most churches locally. This is a sweet celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and is characterised by the sermon recited by a young child. This little boy/girl is tutored by his parents and learns the Priedka (sermon) off by heart, in order to recite it in front of a packed church.

The other activity perhaps more popular amongst younger Maltese is that of Bar Hopping. If I may suggest a good #route# for this kind of activity, head down to Sliema front and make your way, slowly but surely, towards St.Julian’s and Paceville. On the way you can stop off at various watering holes, ensuring you do not run dry.
Finally many early mornings are characterised by Christmas Breakfasts organised both at restaurants or hotels as well as privately. This is a great way to close off a packed Xmas eve after mass or a drinking session, ensuring at the very least you get to sleep with a warm bellyful of nosh.
Oh! Don’t forget to leave a tray of biscuits, milk and a carrot for Santa before you tuck in!
